The topography of the Auschwitz - Birkenau Museum

The Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum comprises two parts: the “mother camp” (Ger. Auschwitz I – Stammlager) and Auschwitz II – Birkenau. The two camps are around 4 km distant from each other; a free shuttle bus service runs between the two sites.
Both parts of the camp are visited as part of the same tour. In Auschwitz I – Stammlager there is a permanent museum exhibition in the former prisoners’ blocks. The main reception building is also here; this is where both groups and individual tourists start their visit, where guides wait for their groups, and group members collect their audio headsets through which they listen to the guide’s commentary. In and around the reception building there are also eateries and shops, including bookshops and florists’ shops. The main parking area is outside the reception building.
The tour begins with the exhibition in Auschwitz I Stammlager and continues to Auschwitz II – Birkenau. There is a free bus running between Auschwitz I – Stammlager and Auschwitz II – Birkenau which departs from the car park outside the reception building.
