Zakopane and the Tatra Mountains. One day trip from Krakow.

The Tatra Mountains and Zakopane were Archbishop Karol Wojtyła’s favourite place to relax. He would come here to hike in the mountains or ski throughout his life. The local highlanders were mutually attached to the Holy Father. Out of gratitude for the fact that John Paul II’s life was spared in the assassination attempt on 13 May 1981, they founded one of Poland’s most beautiful churches: the Church of Our Lady of Fatima in the Krzeptówki area of Zakopane. The church was consecrated by John Paul II himself during his pilgrimage to Poland in 1997. We will attend Mass her, and then we will take a funicular tram up to the top of Gubałówka Hill, which affords a glorious panorama of the Tatras. We will also take a trip out to the nearby village of Chochołów, which is like a living museum of folk architecture with its traditional wooden houses, and we will enjoy a brief stroll up one of the exquisite valleys at the foot of the mountains. Dinner in a restaurant serving regional specialities, to the accompaniment of original highland folk music. Return to Krakow in the evening.
