Pilgrimage Tours

In the footsteps of St John Paul II

Wadowice

An excursion to Wadowice, the small town 50 km from Krakow where Karol Wojtyła, the future Pope John Paul II, was born. We will visit the biographical museum about the pope and saint that now occupies his childhood home, and pray in the parish church in which he was christened.

Sanctuary in Kalwaria Zebrzydowska

We will then go on to the nearby Marian sanctuary in Kalwaria Zebrzydowska, one of the foremost destinations of pilgrimage in Poland and a favourite place of prayer of Karol Wojtyła, who made dozens of pilgrimages there from his childhood onwards and throughout his life. Nestled in the picturesque setting of the Beskid Hills, the Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels with the miraculous image of Our Lady of Kalwaria and the 42 chapels and shrines that make up the “Jesus paths” (Via Dolorosa) and Mary paths” is inscribed on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List.

Sanctuary of Divine Mercy

Our next destination is the Sanctuary of Divine Mercy in Krakow – Łagiewniki, a contemporary basilica in the Krakow suburb of Łagiewniki consecrated by John Paul II in 2002. St Faustina Kowalska, a mystic, whom Jesus  entrusted with the mission of preaching the message of Divine Mercy, served and is buried in the adjacent convent of the Sisters of Mercy.

Krakow

From here we head to the Old Town in the heart of Krakow for a tour of Wawel Cathedral. It was here – the venue of the coronations and burials of the Polish kings – that Karol Wojtyła celebrated his first Holy Mass, and this was later his church during his time as bishop of Krakow. We will also tour the private apartments of Bishop Wojtyła at 21 Kanonicza Street; and in the fourteenth-century Gothic Franciscan Church we will kneel before the image of Our Lady of Sorrows before which Bishop Wojtyła often used to pray. Finally, we will see the palace of the archbishops of Krakow, with the famous window from which Wojtyła, as John Paul II, would converse with the crowds of young people gathered beneath whenever he made his pilgrimages to his native land.
